Leap Year 04:22

about

On February 1st 2024 my wife and I and some friends flew to New Orleans for a long weekend.

New Orleans is a city most known for two things: partying, and being destroyed. These two factors may feel like opposing forces but in New Orleans they work together. To me, it was very clear that this city, and the people who live and work there, are fully aware they could be washed away at any moment; and yet the party continues. But the party is not meant as distraction, but as acceptance. This is a city that celebrates life in the face of death. And I felt it in my bones the entire time I was there.

That feeling influenced a lot of this record, and allowed me to see some of my fears in a different, more positive light. At least for a little while. It also brought me back to my love of American roots music - another NOLA staple - from gospel to soul, from jazz to rock & roll. This is is probably the closest to an "Americana" record I'll ever make.

Of course there's also some silliness and a couple of powerpop bangers on here as well; I know what I'm about. But it was fun to work with a different mindset, one I hope I don't fully lose touch with.

Big thanks to all of my collaborators and to anyone who listens. I can't believe I have been doing this challenge for 9 years.
